The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 Goals and 230 Targets, which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership.

VLR stands for “Voluntary Local Review”, a global process for local governments to engage in the acceleration of SDGs. For instance, “Love & Share Food” initiative promoted by New Taipei City seeks to achieve zero hunger, responsible consumption and production and climate targets. Investment Gateway meets the goal of economic development. Social housing for young people aims to eliminate inequality in Taiwan.

ESG is an abbreviation for three English words: Environment, Social, and Governance. It represents the concepts of environmental protection, social responsibility, and corporate governance. The UN Global Compact first introduced the concept of ESG in 2004, and it is regarded as an indicator for evaluating a company's operations. This is an international trend, and New Taipei City is also keeping up with it.

New Taipei City's SDGs《Voluntary Local Review Urban Declaration》
In response to the UN Climate Summit (COP27), New Taipei City government and the innovation ecosystem platform, Anchor Taiwan,
join hands to invite sustainable leaders from businesses to gather together and collectively contemplate Taiwan's positioning and future in global sustainability. The participating companies range from traditional industries to technology sectors,
encompassing both foreign and hidden champions, with a total market value exceeding two trillion.
New Taipei City has become the first city in Taiwan to join the EIE (Environmental Information Exchange) initiative, utilizing data to drive carbon reduction policies and create a stable and sustainable future for the city.
What is EIE? Google announces its Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE) platform for urban and regional environmental sustainability. This initiative has been rolled out in Taiwan. New Taipei City was the first city in Taiwan to sign up by presenting its own environmental data.
New Taipei City becomes a member of The Powering Past Coal Alliance by entering the coal-free era.
New Taipei City achieved its coal-free status ahead of schedule by decommissioning the last coal-fired cogeneration power plant in October 2022.

This alliance jointly founded by the U.K. and the Canadian governments endeavors to replace coal power with clean energy, through working with local governments and organizations in different countries to decommission old and tired coal power plants. The purpose is to gradually cease the use of coal power, to mitigate climate impact and achieve the Paris Agreement.

The United Nations CSW (Commission on the Status of Women) conference will be held at the UN headquarters in New York in 2023. This is the first physical conference to resume after the pandemic. Outstanding women representatives from various fields around the world will gather together. Taiwan has a record-high participation with 31 civil society organizations joining the conference.
New Taipei City is the only invited city from East Asia, demonstrating its leadership in sustainability. In 2019, New Taipei City took the initiative to release Taiwan's first “Voluntary Local Review on Sustainable Development Goals.” Additionally, the city's efforts in promoting “gender equality” during the pandemic have gained recognition worldwide.

New Taipei City became the 34th member of Rainbow Cities Network
RCN stands for Rainbow Cities Network. Established by the Dutch government, the network currently spans 20 countries across four continents and has a total of 43 member cities. Members submit annual reports on best practices in diversity and equality and encourage sister cities to hoist the rainbow flag. The purpose is to connect more cities to support the LGBTQ rights.
The work portraying New Taipei City is centered on the perspective of a transgender migrant worker. Mayumi from the Philippines experienced the friendly support at the workplace when she came out of closet. She was invited to have her picture taken at the first public toilet with a gender friendly mark issued by New Taipei City.
Sustainability is no longer afar. It is integral to our life. Sustainability is a way of life, an attitude friendly to the environment and the world. It is also the keyword that changes the life of future generations. You and I will be part of it because we can all envision the city of the future and take action.
